Frederik Pohl

Frederik Pohl is one of the great SF writers of this century. He was made a grand master of SF by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1992. He has authored about 100 books on a lot of subjects, but mainly science fiction.
He was a member of the Futurians in the 1930's and 1940's. It was basically the first group of teenagers who got together because of science fiction and the affect it had on their lives. Other members of the Futurians were Isaac Asimov, Damon Knight, Donald Wolheim, Judith Merril, Virginia Kidd, James Blish, and Cyril Kornbluth... which is a rather impressive list of folks when you consider they were all part of the same club at an early age.

Pohl starting writing in the late 1930's and published somewhat through the 1930's and 1940's. However, his main work at the time to SF was via editing some magazines and being active in fandom, and working as an agent for many authors. In the 1950's he took off as a serious writer in collaboration with Cyril Kornbluth. Their novel The Space Merchants is now considered one of the great classics of the field. Kornbluth died of a heart attack in 1958, and it has mainly being Pohl who kept Kornbluth's name alive in the field. They won the Hugo for "The Meeting" in 1973, which Pohl wrote from scraps Kornbluth and he had put together in the 1950's. Another notable short by both Pohl and Kornbluth is "Quaker Cannon".

Through the 1960's Pohl became the best editor in SF. He was the editor of both Galaxy and If throughout that decade. He also wrote the story "Day Million" which is one of the best pieces of short SF ever written. He discovered many science fiction authors in 1960's via his editing Galaxy and If. Larry Niven is only the most notable of these. He also collaborated with Jack Williamson extensively in the 1960's, though they did collaborate as early as the 1950's and as late as the 1990's... their best work together was in the 1960's with their Starchild works.

In the 1970's Pohl wrote the two masterpieces of his career as a writer. Gateway and Man Plus are two of the best SF novels ever written. He also was President of the SFWA in the 1970's. He also wrote a great biography called The Way the Future Was about the beginnings of his career. I would love to see him update this to include his entire career.

In the 1980's he continued to write good novels. Best were the Heechee stories, which continued Gateway along and created one of the great series of novels in SF. .In 1992 he was made a Grand Master by the SFWA, an award long deserved. he science fiction and fantasy ....
